Our challenge was to design a bio inspired play experience that brought the movement, behavior, and character of a chosen animal to life. We chose the chameleon and set out to translate its climbing ability, territorial behavior, and agility into an interactive activity that would engage fourth graders physically, socially, and imaginatively within a limited indoor footprint.
We drew inspiration from how chameleons climb, compete, and protect their territory. Our team built a rainforest environment out of recyclable, child-safe materials, including:
I contributed to designing and fabricating the major structural components such as the branch bases, rock elements, and foliage supports. Therefore, ensuring the play space was safe, stable, and strong enough for active movement by 8–10 year olds.
We developed a story about two rival chameleon families racing to collect eggs while avoiding snakes. Gameplay included:
This blend of physical challenge, light strategy, and narrative created a deeply engaging experience.
On Demo Day, over 80 fourth graders play tested Chunky Chameleons, and it quickly became one of the most popular stations. Kids were especially excited by:
Feedback from both students and instructors highlighted how well the game captured the motion, personality, and playful nature of chameleons. The experience was safe, bio inspired, physically engaging, and encouraged collaboration, creativity, and movement.
Chunky Chameleons successfully demonstrated how storytelling + physical design + biological inspiration can combine to create an immersive, kid centered play experience.
